I am Janessa Gourdin, born and raised in Colorado. I am a student and Peer Mentor with TRIO SSS. In 2019, I decided to return to college at FRCC, where I received my CPhT and CSPT certificates in 2020. At the same time, I was also studying for my A.A. in Psychology. In 2019 I found my academic community within TRIO SSS as I became a participant and shortly thereafter was on the Dean’s list and joined the team as a TRIO Peer Mentor in 2020. I am a single parent and caregiver for my 6-year-old son and 85-year-old grandfather. I have been described as perspicacious and determined. I would describe myself as an intersectional individual that include being a WOC (woman of color), a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, and someone who has struggled with mental health disorders and the stigma associated with it. With this said, I am pursuing a career within Psychology and women's studies. My identities and knowledge around intersectionality have led me to be an advocate for social justice issues within my community. I am a lover metal music and terrified of birds. I will be co-presenting with Elizabethe Plante.

Hello! My name is Ana Carolina Gutierrez and I am a Colorado Native and Denver Public Schools graduate. I work as the International Student Support Specialist and DSO at Red Rocks Community College. I have my Master’s degree in International Development from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, a Certificate in International Law and Human Rights from the Sturm College of Law, and a BA in Public Policy, Spanish, and Leadership Studies from the University of Denver. I am also a recent graduate of the Red Rocks Community College Integrative Health program and try to incorporate the concept of wellness into my social justice and immigration law work. In the past I have worked as a legal assistant with immigration attorneys working through everything from Central American asylum cases to wage theft occurring in immigrant day laborer communities. I have also worked in higher education for several years, including as a case manager for undergraduate students at the University of Denver experiencing times of crisis. I like to combine this immigration, human rights, and higher education experience to inform how I can support my students and reshape college systems to better serve their needs. I firmly believe that creating and strengthening educational support systems are critical to academic success – especially for minoritized populations – and I myself benefitted from many of these programs throughout my academic career. I am excited to present at this conference and hope it is a place where we can continue to create equitable and socially just solutions to provide the best opportunities and outcomes for our students.
