Leveraging passion pursuits, creativity, community, and joyful exploration to increase equity in outcomes is possible in the remote environment if we are willing to be agile, reflective, and take positive practice risks. In this session, presenters will share their experience grappling with equity and social justice issues, the techniques they’ve tried , and discuss the observed changes. Participants will then engage in guided discussion to further develop philosophical and practical ideas for their practice. More specifically, topics will include a human rights based approach to adult learning, the phraseology of “mutual accountability” and onus, what we mean when we say we are offering “multiple entry points” to course content, the tensions between perceived classroom chaos and control, and using an equity lens for designing major assignments. Social and emotional “crosswalks” will also be explored through emphases on and examples of passion, positivity, and joy in learning; freedom, flexibility and trust in academic relationships; and margins for personal “trial and error” in positive risk-taking and learning engagement processes. Before the session adjourns, participants will be invited to informally share a couple of their own various, “latest and greatest” recommendations for engaging teaching and learning in the remote environment.
